5 Tips for Decorating a Fall Wedding

Did you know the most popular time of year to get married? Would you believe it’s fall? Specifically, September and October are the most popular months of the year to get married followed closely by June, according to the Knot Wedding Survey. You can read it for yourself here and find other fun facts about weddings as well…when you’re done reading this blog.

While we have sailed past September, we love October and November weddings because decorating with the seasons is beautiful and fun. There are many ways to incorporate fall foliage, pumpkins, and other ornamental gourds into your wedding. Important to note about October and November weddings is that the temperature usually makes it possible to consider an outdoor wedding and reception. It’s finally cool enough to gather outdoors for any length of time without being a sticky, sweaty mess. Our Rooftop venue is perfect for a smaller, outdoor wedding or reception underneath the stars.

In October 2022, the Borg’s entrusted Royal Affairs Ballroom with their beautiful wedding reception. The wedding was held in a church and the reception took place in the ballroom. The pictures included in this post are from this beautiful, fall wedding. Decorations used rich colors, seasonal pumpkins, and autumn-colored flowers. Kayleen Shearer did an amazing photography job for the bride and groom and captured the event perfectly.

Let’s cover 5 simple ways to incorporate fall into your wedding decor.

  1. Incorporate nature - wood, sticks, leaves

  2. Use the colors of fall - gold, red, pink, and muted hues

  3. Add foliage to your florals

  4. Pumpkins, gourds, and other ornaments of the season

  5. Add color and texture with rugs or other layers around the room

Incorporate nature - wood, sticks, leaves

Using natural elements to decorate tables, entryways, and place settings is a great way to expand your budget and set the mood for the reception. Take a stroll in nature to gather what is needed to visit your local Hobby Lobby for the perfect, fall, wedding accessories.

Use the colors of fall - gold, red, pink, and muted hues

Consider the colors of fall as the leaves change to determine the shades used at your wedding. Jewel tones like turquoise, deep red, and orange provide a beautiful backdrop to other muted colors like blush pink, navy, and shades of green.

Add foliage to your florals.

Flowers are often a large piece of the budget and decor for a wedding or reception. To stretch your flower budget further, add seasonal foliage to the mix. Think of wispy wheat, eucalyptus, rosemary, or other herbs to create the perfect bouquet or tablescape. We love this article from Bloom Culture with ideas for several types of foliage to add to your bouquets.

Pumpkins, gourds, and other ornaments of the season

Pumpkins are available in so many different colors, sizes, and shapes now. Gourds and other ornamental squashes make beautiful centerpiece arrangements to complement your floral arrangements and other table decorations. Stacks of pumpkins also provide a beautiful and whimsical backdrop for photos.

Add color and texture with rugs or other layers around the room.

With the location of the reception in mind, rugs and other textiles can add warmth and depth to the space. If you have selected an outdoor space like the Rooftop at Royal Affairs, rugs can be the focal point of all your decoration. A beautiful rug can bring in all the colors used to serve as an anchor for the flowers, foliage, and table decorations. If an outdoor reception is planned, it’s important to prepare for cooler temperatures at night and consider leaving light scarves on the ladies' seats so they can keep warm in style throughout the night. Layers and textures can add a lot of dimension to the decoration without a big hit to the budget.
