The mother-son dance is a tradition at American weddings that we love and enjoy. It signifies the love between a mother and son and the new season of married life ahead. Choosing the right song for the mother-son dance may be difficult only because there are so many great songs from which to choose.

We encourage you to consider your dancing style, reflect on your relationship, and listen to some great music together before choosing the best song for you.

First, we have three questions to answer to guide you as you decide. Next, we will offer 20 songs from various genres to get you thinking about what song best reflects your mother-son relationship.

  1. What song makes you think of your son? What song makes you think of your mother?

  2. Do you want the song to be fun and choreographed or more serious and thoughtful?

  3. What’s the message you wish to convey with the song selection?

As you consider these questions, take a listen to the different songs listed below and see which one best reflects your relationship. There are a lot of beautiful and fun songs. You probably can’t go wrong.

  1. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

  2. “You’ll Be in My Heart” (Acoustic Version) – by Phil Collins

  3. “Then They Do” – by Trace Adkins

  4. “My Wish” – by Rascal Flatts

  5. “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King

  6. “I'll Stand By You” by The Pretenders

  7. “You Are My Sunshine” by Johnny Cash

  8. “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart

  9. “Mother Like Mine” by The Band Perry

  10. “Like My Mother Does” by Lauren Alaina

  11. “The Baby” by Blake Shelton

  12. “Boy” by Lee Brice

  13. “You’ve Got A Friend” by Chaz Mazzota

  14. “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong

  15. “I Say A Little Prayer” by Aretha Franklin

  16. “A Mother’s Prayer” by Celine Dion

  17. “Like Jesus Does” by Eric Church

  18. “Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney

  19. "Forever Now" by Michael Bublé

  20. “The Blessing” by Kari Jobe & Cody Carnes

If none of these great options is exactly what you’re looking for, you can check out these other lists to help you as you decide.

Keep in mind that it’s easy to select a song sitting in separate houses, listening to Spotify or Pandora on a smartphone. The key is to see how fleeting and precious these moments are and to sit down together to reflect on the past and be excited for the future as you pick the best song for your special dance.

At Royal Affairs Ballroom, we get to see lots of mother-son dances. We love them all. They reflect on the unique bond between a mother and son. We love to be the venue where special moments like this take place. Call us today to see the venue and to secure your preferred date.

Now, go call your mom.
